WiFi connection from Camera to iPad / Android - Eye-Fi is a company which markets the Eye-Fi card and wireless service specifically for digital cameras. Eye-Fi card is compatible with almost any camera that uses SD Card slot and adds wireless connectivity to the camera. Connectivity can be used to transfer images and video to computer, upload to the site automatically, or for geotagging (WPS). Not only that, the card is also no storage of 4 GB or 8 GB.
At CES 2011, then, Eye-Fi announced the development of Mobile Card and Direct Mode. According to them, this new product will allow the transfer of data from the camera to the tablet and smartphone. This was previously only possible on their top products are very expensive. A few days ago, Eye-Fi has launched a new product, Mobile X2, and allow the service to all Eye-Fi product X2. If you buy the Eye-Fi X2 now, these services are automatically installed. Meanwhile, users of Eye-Fi card X2 which has had this before just need to download the updated firmware and software.
We tried the performance of Eye-Fi Connect X2 to communicate with Apple iPad. In addition to iPad, card is also compatible with all Cisco IOS-based devices (iPhone and iPod Touch) and Android-based devices that have Wi-Fi connection.
Eye-Fi Mobile Connect X2
Eye-Fi Mobile X2 ($ 80) is their latest products. This card has a capacity of 8 GB, and services Endless Memory, Online Sharing, and Direct Mode. Two other services Geotagging ($ 30) and Hot-Spot Access ($ 30/bulan) is available as an upgrade online. There is also an online backup service via the Eye-Fi View ($ 5/bulan, $ 50/tahun).
Eye-Fi Connect X2 ($ 50) has a service and the option to upgrade the same with X2 Mobile, but with a smaller capacity.
Eye-Fi Pro X2
Eye-Fi Pro X2 ($ 150) has a capacity of 8 GB and all the services available, including Geotagging and Hot-Spot Access. Not only that, this card also supports RAW image format, while other types of cards only supports JPEG and video.
Type of Service
Endless Memory will move the photos and delete them from your memory card if it has been moved. You can choose to move to a tablet, to a computer, or to online storage. In this way, a memory card will never run out.
Online Sharing can automatically uploading photos to Flickr, Picasa, Facebook, YouTube, and 21 other popular sites. This service can be done via the tablet with Direct Mode or directly from the camera with support for Hotspot Access.
Hotspot Access allows the camera to connect with thousands of Wi-Fi is recorded by the Eye-Fi. Without this service, you just can connect with Wi-Fi in your home or office. However, it is unclear whether the scope of these services to reach Indonesia.
Geotagging will record the location shooting using WPS (Wi-Fi Positioning System). WPS uses as a guide to the location of the hotspot position. This mode is certainly not as accurate as GPS. In addition, not yet clear whether these services include Indonesia.
Use
In the sales package Eye-Fi Connect X2, included USB card reader. Card reader is useful to first setup via a PC, including a personal account on the server Eye-Fi. After the first setup and connectivity to the iPad is configured, you can change settings online via IPAD without needing to connect to a PC.
Eye-Fi card and memory card supplied
Settings and set the connectivity is not difficult, but it can take a long time because of the many options and configuration services as possible.
Performance
We tested the performance of transfers with a Canon Ixus and Sony Nex-5. Both have proven compatible with the Eye-Fi, which means the camera will continue to burn when it is transferring data. For complete data on a compatible camera can be checked at the Eye-Fi site.
If your camera does not have a SD slot, Eye-Fi has been testing this CF adapter and think they can function on the Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 7D.
Testing using Eye-Fi Connect X2 + latest firmware, the first generation iPad 4.2.1 + IOS, and applications of Eye-Fi for iPad v2.01. We also tested the compatibility with the Archos 101 which based on Android.
Speed
We test shoot in three picture sizes. In each image size, we tried to capture five times and measure the time of transfer. The transfer time is calculated from the time the shutter button is pressed until the picture appears on the IPAD and time averaged. The size of transferred files is also the average of five experiments.
Eye-Fi transfer speeds to IPAD
We also tried to measure the speed of video transfer, but could not produce a valid measurement because of issues with the video transfer using the camera type that we tried, as stated in the Eye-Fi site.
We also did not test because the RAW file format is only supported by the Eye-Fi Pro X2. If extrapolated, one-size 20MB RAW files produced by Nikon D7000 transfer will take 190 seconds, or about 3 minutes.
If you use the Mobile Connect X2 or X2 for shooting RAW, RAW files will be stored in the card but not transferred. If you are shooting RAW + JPEG, both will be saved but only JPEG is transferred.
If you are using Pro X2, you can configure whether you want to transfer only RAW, JPEG only, or both.
Stability, Security and Power Reach
Coverage Eye-Fi connectivity Direct Mode to APPLE IPAD including good. We try to separate the camera and IPAD as far as possible. Up to 10 meters with an unobstructed wall, the Eye-Fi is still able to send photos to the iPad. However, at this distance transfer rate also dropped so that the duration of the transfer to swell up to 3x normal.
Stability is also good connections. By default, the Eye-Fi will turn off the signal after the transfer to save power. However, you can change the settings so that the connection will remain lit so that the cameras are continuously connected to the iPad. However, this mode makes the camera card and becomes very hot.
Just like other wireless connection, connection security trntu noteworthy. But you need not worry. Every Eye-Fi Card has a unique id and password so that your photos can not easily be taken anyone who happens to have a tablet device. Due to security reasons this is the Eye-Fi applying multi-layered system of authenticating a bit tedious at the beginning of the setup.
Views
Views app Eye-Fi for the iPad.
In the iPad, photos and video will go to the Saved Photos folder, not into a folder Imported or Events such as when using the Camera Connection Kit. Of course, this means that all pictures will be mixed together without being separated into folders. Eye-Fi in the application you can view the entire image is transferred. However, the Eye-Fi application for iPad v2.01 still have a slight problem that does not display correctly when the device is rotated to horizontal.
Geotagging
In settings, you can set if you want the photos were uploaded to social networking sites automatically. You can also see the location info if the photos are geotagged with camera-enabled GPS such as the Casio EX-H20G or with Geotagging services from Eye-Fi.
Conclusion
With the availability of Direct Mode, there are so many possibilities are open. However, keep in mind, this mode is not designed to copy one or two photos to phone a friend who happened to ask. Although it may be possible, but the settings including complicated.
Direct Mode is designed for pairing between the camera and tablet / smartphone our own. If you're traveling or in a photo shoot for a client, Direct Mode can continuously copy photos to your tablet without the need to stop taking photographs. Once finished shooting, you can turn on the tablet and enjoy the photos without having to wait.
With the Eye-Fi, you no longer need a tablet or mobile phone that has a SD Card slot. Provided or Android-based IOS, you pundapat transfer photos from your camera. If you have an SD Card tablet slotpun, Eye-Fi is more convenient to use.
